SpecialEurasia attends the 31st World Congress of the IFJ in Oman
SpecialEurasia will attend the 31st World Congress of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in Muscat (Oman) from May 31st, 2022, to June 3rd, 2022, to discuss issues related to media, press freedom, and violence against journalists. This event will also be an opportunity to get acquainted with Omani politics and economics and to meet local representatives.
Silvia Boltuc, SpecialEurasia Managing Director, is currently in Muscat, the capital of Oman, to represent our team at the event organised by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Omani Journalists Association (OJA). Over 250 participants representing journalists’ unions and associations from 92 countries will attend the Congress to debate key themes such as surveillance of journalists and action to end impunity for crimes against media workers.
On May 31st, 2022, the participants will attend a pre-conference that examines the Covid pandemic’s impact on journalism and IFJ’s affiliates’ efforts to save jobs and lives in the last two years. Furthermore, the newly elected IFJ Gender Council and its Steering Committee will lead a review of their actions during the previous three years, including campaigns to eradicate violence against women journalists, close the gender pay gap and foster women’s access to leading roles in the media – and adopt a new action plan.
According to the data and information published by IFJ, the last three years have been especially challenging for journalists worldwide due to the violence increase against media workers, particularly in Afghanistan, Yemen, Ukraine and Mexico.
The event is an opportunity for Oman to open its doors to the world and show the results achieved in the last two years under Sultan Haytham bin Tariq bin Taymūr Al Sa’id. In this regard, the Minister of Information of the Sultanate of Oman, Dr Abudallah bin Nasser Al Harassi, stated that the 31st World Congress of the IFJ shows the country’s ability to organise major global events. Indeed, the event would enhance the Sultanate’s prestige at the world level, considering that the conference will focus the attention on media and freedom press.
Al Harassi said that the event would also include meetings with international journalists dealing with the activities to elucidate Oman Vision 2040, Oman’s economic potential and acquainting the participants with the Sultanate’s foreign policy and media.
